This is my first attempt to communicate in this manner. I am as different from you as two people could be. I read some of your writing because of an article in USA Today which included a link. I am in my 50’s, an American born citizen, a white male, a police officer in a high school, a political conservative, a conservative Christian, a father of three girls, all grown, a husband of one wife of 36 years, and a believer in trying to live by the principles found in the Bible. When I was a young person, I had no belief in God, was politcally liberal, marched in peace marches during our Vietnam war, smoked pot, and participated in numerous discussions on the evils of our government and those of other nations. My support of the Republican party comes not because I think that they are always correct or even because I like the politicians. My personal feeling is that no politician gets to any high level without compromise. That includes President Bush. It is also obvious that he comes from a moneyed and politically connected family that is committed to the preservation of itself and its moneyed friends. I also believe that all government entities regularly deceive others out of the perceived need for self preservation and the knowledge that their political opponents are doing the same to them. However, those who are not in power but would like to be are culpable of the very things that they accuse those who are in power of doing. I do not think that Bush is the monster that some folks think he is. He is just a man who is trying to do what he thinks is right, no more. His background of priviledge is certainly a factor in his decisions, as is his loyalty to his friends who make a lot of the decisions in this country quietly. I think that most presidents in this democracy do pretty much as they are expected to do by those who put up the money to get them elected. It is the same in any country, democratic or not. The rich control the masses.
As a medium income earner in this country I am not one of those who control it. Therefore, I can do as I do and live my life in peace with my neighbors, or I can struggle with the powers that be to change the politcal landscape. As long as there is money and power to be attained, there well be men and women who desire both and will struggle to get them. Often, issues are just the means to gather support groups. Support groups equal power and money. Governments rise and fall, leaders rise and fall. There is always someone who is being oppressed by someone else who is oppressing. My unsolicited advice is to love your husband and your family. Cultivate faithful friends and be faithful to them. Enjoy what priviledges and freedoms that you do have. If a quite life does not appeal to you, then jump in with both feet into the political arena but expect to be wounded by the lions around you.
You have been sharing your heart and now I have shared a part of mine. Bless you.

I know you don’t like Bush but you need to realize that whatever degree of freedom you gain as a woman will be do to the events he set in motion. Up until now you have been running but you have only been running in place. Because of him the world’s attention is now focused on you; make the most of it.

I lived and worked in Iran during the uprising against the Shah in1978, and had to be evacuated on Jan 3, 1979. We enjoyed living in Shiraz and Teheran although the lifestyle was a bit different. A freind of mine was one of the hostages afterward, and we worried very much for his safety..
I cannot imagine how it is now to live under the restrictive regimes now in control of the country. No religion should ever have control of any country or its citizens’ freedom to come and go as they please or how they dress….
It always amazes me to see how Muslims complain of mistreatment in foreign countries, when any outsider/person of different religious belief is not even allowed or tolerated in their own country. Mosques everywhere are being used as a hiding place for terreroist weapons and the “fermenting” place for anti-gov planing.
Instead of enjoying the “Freedoms” they are living with in our USA, they want to destroy it !
They can’t even “think” like that in Iran…..
I rememver the old slogan of “Yankee Go Home” that I used to here in Iran, but they also
said to themselves, “and take me with you….”
Let freedom of speech ring out everywhere !!!!
Stay safe there…..

Please do not be disappointed with Visa procedures. Governments everywhere in the world are slow processors although comparatively the U.S. processes things faster and runs somewhat like a business. Canada is a great country but it’s cold and the people are not as joyful and friendly. Typically the warmer the climate the warmer the people. The U.S. is like 10 Canadas but with a lot more opportunity and a lot of better climatic areas.

Hello, first time I have been to your site. One comment I must make. Don’t fret about your English – your English is much better than my Farsi.
Good luck with coming to the US or Canada. With your insight and learning, you will be an asset no matter which community you choose.

Lady Sun, I am a U.S. citizen and I commend and congratulate you for reaching out to the rest of the world. There are far more plusses than minuses for these “blog” kind of forums. I look forward to the day when groups do not have to isolate themselves or distort the truth in order to preserve what they are or want to become. Regarding an open democratic society, I have only to say that there must be a happy medium between Egypt and Iran. Folks like yourself are charting the new course. In defense of an open, secular society, I quote Shakespeare: “Virtue untried is not true virtue.” I can pass by a Cosmopolitan Magazine with a sexy lady on the cover in a grocery store and not be overwhelmed by lust. I can recognize women as people, instead of “property” or “objects”. If I do not test these virtues, than I am a mere robot. I do not know if Muslims believe in a devil. However, in Christianity, we do. God created a devil so that we would have free will. Without freedom, we are mere slaves of God. In Christianity, God wants us to love him by our own choosing. I suspect Allah is that same God to the muslim world. A devout muslim will stay that way in the face of temptation just as a devout Christian would. The hardliners are using Islam to control the people. The people must learn to use Islam to dismantle the hardliners and their intolerances and injustices. It is my sincere hope that this can be done peacefully. It is my belief that communication is the path to becoming a citizen of the world. You are paving the way to a brighter future not only for Iran, but for the rest of humanity –who is coming to terms with world citizenship, but is missing pieces of the puzzle. Iran is one of those pieces. It is better to build a society based on understanding, tolerance and truth, instead of one based on control, fear and forced ignorance. Iran needs its own “Martin Luther King” who has a dream of an Iran where Islam is practiced out of love and commitment; instead of fear of retribution by the “thought police.”

Lady Sun, I just got done reading an article that included your name and web address on it. I would ike to thank you for communicating in this way. I am 21 years old, work a civilian job, and have also been in the US Army for 4 year thus far. I love hearing other peoples thoughts. I love my country, as much as I can tell you care about yours. I hope one day our countries can be mutual freinds and not have all this tension brough on by a few people who are supposed to look out for us. I just want to say hello, and I love the work you are doing, and hope you can do it into the future.

hi Lady Sun – your wisdom is very inspiring and I’m sure your readership will grow and grow…but I sincerely hope censorship doesn’t and that bloggers from your homeland will be allowed to continue to communicate – it’s fascinating this exchange of cultural backgrounds and can only help heal the wounds inflicted by minorities.. good luck in all you do!!

Hello Lady Sun and Friends.
I want you to know how much I appreciate your site. If anything it reinforces my belief that we all have the right to be heard. Whether others agree with us or not. I belief most reasonable people can see through idiotic positions and beliefs.
As an American citizen I have been priviledged to many things others haven’t. I speak my mind within reason without fear of my gov’ts intervention of my beliefs. I don’t cry fire in a theatre or hijack in an airport because I know it is not appropriate if it actually isn’t happening. I try to be socially responsible. I also don’t say things that would enforce my social standing and negate that of others due to prejudice of race, creed, color or God belief except as an opinion (which like noses on our face comes in different sizes, shapes and orgins). But I can complain about my leadership of gov’t and even critize their actions without fear and even do my best throught elections or reform to get them out of office. I live in a reasonable society.
I have friends that are christian, jews and moslems as well as a number of people that their beliefs can’t really be classified (pagan, agnostic and others). These categories in no way lessens them in the sight of ‘that that is greater than the greatest and is greater still’…… God, Allah, Jehovah… or whatever title there is for that wonderousness of that that is beyond us as humans. The God I believe in is larger than dogma, doctrines and the conceptionalizations of me and possibly most humans. We can see through the history of all religions there has been change, growth and reformations. Christians may be only reformed Jews and the same may be said for Moslems. What beliefs was there before the Jews, Christians and Moslems that lead us to be Jews, Christians and Moslems today… does the basis of our beliefs lessen us because of our roots. Are we not all children of Abraham? As I understand… there is a tolerance in all religions that believe in the ‘One God’ of all., whether it be Hindu, Buddhist, Moslem, Christian, Jew or……… Why do we fight??????
It’s not of God surely… It must be for power, greed, possession or control. Wasn’t there a God before human belief systems and won’t there be a God after.

There is so much wisdom in the voices i see. Throughout history people have have gone to extremes to force others to believe the way they do. If this ever comes to an end, then will all mankind be free.

Hi Lady Sun!
I just thought I’d check out your blog after having seen a link to it on cnn.com. I’ve never “blogged” before- but I just finished looking around your site and wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed reading your posts- especially the ones concerning what it is like to live in Iran.
I would however, like to take exception to the person who wrote that Canadians are not “as joyful and friendly” as Americans. Canadians are wonderful- friendly, extremely polite and well spoken- if I do say so myself! ;)
At any rate- thanks for sharing your thoughts!
